Who Are the Leo Twins?

Some artists spend years trying to get discovered. Haroon and Sharoon Leo got discovered because they sold their mobile phones to buy a guitar and a violin. That decision, made when they were teenagers standing outside a music shop in Rawalpindi, set in motion a journey that would take them from playing church hymns in a small community to performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages.

Haroon and Sharoon Leo, born 27 July 1993 and professionally known as Leo Twins, are Pakistani musicians and multi-instrumentalists. Born in Rawalpindi to a Christian family, the Leo Twins studied at the Punjab College of Information Technology. They are identical twins, but their musical roles are anything but identical.

Sharoon, the elder of the twins, plays violin and cello, while Haroon plays more than 10 instruments including guitar, rubab, tabla, piano, cajon, ukulele, mandolin, darbuka, and other percussion instruments. When those two complementary skill sets come together on stage, the result is a musical experience that audiences consistently describe as unlike anything they have seen before.

Where It All Began: Church, a Guitar Shop, and a Generous Teacher

The Leo Twins’ musical roots are grounded in their faith and their community. Part of the Christian community in Rawalpindi, a minority with a robust network of internal connections, they began by playing church music and being part of the choir. In their family life, their elder brother Asher Sidhu played a pivotal role in igniting their love for music.

One day, they saw a guitar and violin at a shop, but did not have enough money to buy them. So they sold their new mobiles and paid for the instruments. Ustad Idrees Ahmed Khan, who used to give music lessons at the shop, was observing them the whole time, and asked if they would like to learn music from him for free. That act of generosity from their first teacher became the foundation on which everything else was built.

Their early exposure to classical ragas through church music gave them something that most self-taught musicians never develop: an understanding of how melody works at its deepest structural level. That classical grounding is what separates the Leo Twins from the many cover artists who came and went while they kept growing.

Nescafe Basement: The Breakthrough That Changed Everything

In 2016, they did their first amateur video of an instrumental performance and put it on YouTube. Xulfi from the band Call, who was producing Nescafe Basement Season 3, came across this video and was super impressed by the skillset.

That YouTube video, made at home with no professional setup, was the moment everything changed. Xulfi, one of the most respected producers in Pakistani music, saw something in the twins that he knew the industry needed. The Leo Twins began their career on Nescafe Basement, where they became a regular part of the house band under the production of Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan.

They appeared across Seasons 3, 4, and 5 of the programme, playing multiple instruments for some of Pakistan’s biggest artists and delivering original segments that showcased their range and versatility. Nescafe Basement gave them access to an audience of millions who had never seen musicians move between so many instruments within a single performance.

After season 3, Leo Twins were already working with Atif Aslam and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and other big names of the industry.  Being brought in as session musicians and collaborative artists by artists of that level confirms just how quickly their reputation grew once the industry had seen what they could do.

PSL, Independence Day and a National Presence

One of their breakthrough moments came in 2018 with their feature on the official anthem Hum Zalmi for the Peshawar Zalmi team in the Pakistan Super League, collaborating with the band Call and featuring actors Mahira Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi in the music video.  A PSL anthem is one of the most high-profile music placements in Pakistani entertainment, reaching tens of millions of viewers during one of the country’s most watched sporting events. Being part of that production placed the Leo Twins firmly in the national spotlight.

In August 2017, the Leo Twins delivered a surprise Independence Day performance aboard a Pakistan International Airlines flight, joining singer Momina Mustehsan to play and sing the patriotic anthem Dil Dil Pakistan for passengers en route from Islamabad to Karachi. This impromptu jam session, captured on video and shared widely, captured national sentiment on Pakistan’s 70th anniversary. The spontaneity and warmth of that moment showed a side of the Leo Twins that studios and stages cannot always capture: their ability to make music feel immediate, personal, and joyful in any setting.

The Ertugrul Cover and Going Global

During the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020, when the world stopped and musicians everywhere scrambled to stay connected with their audiences, the Leo Twins launched their Quarantine Sessions on YouTube. What followed was one of the most remarkable organic viral moments in Pakistani music history.

Their cover of the Ertugrul Ghazi soundtrack went viral during Ramadan when Pakistan was captivated by the Turkish drama serial. Their fans had asked for it in the comments section of their channel and they delivered. They decided to keep it very folk yet classical and retained tihai and palta at the end in keeping with their training.

Their viral 2020 cover of the Dirilis Ertugrul soundtrack amassed over 41 million YouTube views, showcasing their ability to fuse Turkish themes with their signature Eastern-Western style and attracting international acclaim.

Going from 50,000 to 500,000 subscribers organically through one deeply considered instrumental cover is not something that happens through luck. It happens when musicians who have spent years developing genuine craft meet an audience that is ready to receive something real.

International Stages and a Growing Global Reputation

The Leo Twins are known to be the best instrumentalists in Pakistan of the current generation, with their quarantine sessions having gone viral worldwide and their uniquely soulful renditions of Ertugrul Ghazi and Sanson ki Mala having enchanted music lovers across the globe. That description, used to promote them at the O2 Arena in London alongside Ali Sethi and Shae Gill, is a remarkable endorsement from one of the world’s most prestigious concert venues.

In 2023, the Leo Twins performed at the Darbar Culture Festival, showcasing their musical synergy. The Darbar Festival is one of the most respected Indian classical music festivals held in the United Kingdom, regularly featuring artists of the highest international calibre. Being invited to perform there places the Leo Twins in a context that goes far beyond the Pakistani music scene.

Their musical influences reflect the breadth of their ambitions. Their inspiration comes from maestros such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Yanni, and the famous German violinist David Garrett. They also have a very strong connection with their own roots and their recreations of golden melodies such as Saason ki Mala by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Lambi Judai by Reshma, and Ay Watan Ke Sajeelay Jawano by Madam Noor Jahan were widely appreciated.

Their repertoire spans classical ragas, Sufi devotional music, Pakistani folk classics, and contemporary Western covers, which means they can shape their set to suit any event and any audience.
