There are very few moments in the history of Pakistani music when a single song travels so far, so fast, that the entire world takes notice. Pasoori was that moment. And at the center of it was Ali Sethi, an artist whose journey to that point was unlike anything the Pakistani music industry had seen before.
Ali Aziz Sethi, born July 2, 1984, is a Pakistani singer, songwriter, composer, and author. Born to journalists and politicians Najam Sethi and Jugnu Mohsin, Sethi rose to prominence with his debut novel, The Wish Maker, in 2009. He came to music not through the conventional route of college bands or talent competitions, but through literature, classical training, and a deep intellectual relationship with the music of South Asia. That background gives his voice something that most pop artists simply do not have: a sense of historical weight and cultural depth in every note he sings.
Ali pursued schooling at Aitchison College in Lahore and later graduated from Harvard University with a degree in South Asian Studies and economics. At Harvard, he began writing what would become his debut novel. That novel, The Wish Maker, was published in 2009 and earned international critical praise, with The New York Times describing his prose as lucid and often soaring. It was long-listed for the 2011 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature and shortlisted for the Shakti Bhatt First Book Award.
Although Sethi received some musical training as a child, he did not begin to formally train in Hindustani classical music until after graduating from college. His formal training came under the guidance of Ustad Naseeruddin Saami and the legendary ghazal singer Farida Khanum, where he delved into the intricate nuances of Hindustani classical music. Studying under Farida Khanum was not just a lesson in vocal technique. It was an education in the emotional language of an entire musical tradition.
In 2011, Sethi traveled to India to serve as an adviser on Mira Nair’s political thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist. At a social gathering during his visit, Sethi sang the ghazal Dil Jalaane Ki Baat Karte Ho, originally sung by his teacher Farida Khanum. Nair was so moved by his rendition that she urged him to record the song, which went on to feature on the soundtrack of the film. The song became Sethi’s stepping stone into his recording career, brought him international recognition as a singer, and was named the highlight of the album by The Times of India.
That is a remarkable way to begin a singing career. Not through an audition or a record label, but through a spontaneous performance at a dinner party that moved one of the world’s most respected film directors to immediate action. It tells you everything about the quality and sincerity in Ali Sethi’s voice.
In 2015, Sethi made his singing debut on Coke Studio Season 8 with Umraan Langiyaan, a Punjabi folk song originally sung by Asad Amanat Ali Khan. He received significant praise, quickly establishing himself as a millennial practitioner of traditional folk and classical music.
His Coke Studio appearances became a signature part of his artistic identity. He was not there to chase trend. He was there to bring something genuinely rooted in classical and folk tradition and present it to a generation of listeners who were hearing it for the first time in a form they could connect with. That approach built him a loyal audience across Pakistan, India, and the global South Asian diaspora.
He also recorded songs for the film Manto in 2015 and released original singles including Kithay Nain Na Jori, a tribute to the legendary folk singer Reshma, and Mahi Mera in 2016, both of which received warm critical reception. His Lux Style Award nomination for Best Playback Singer and Hum Award nomination for Best Music Single during this period were early signals of formal industry recognition catching up with the audience love he had already built.
In February 2022, Ali Sethi released Pasoori with debutant Shae Gill as part of Coke Studio Season 14. Pasoori became the fastest song of the season to garner one million views on YouTube. It went on to become the first Coke Studio Pakistan song to feature on Spotify’s Viral 50 global chart and ranked at number one on Spotify India’s Viral 50 chart.
What happened next was genuinely historic. On May 4, 2022, Pasoori climbed to the top of Spotify’s Viral 50 Global chart, and on May 7, 2022, ninety days after its release, it hit 100 million views on YouTube.
According to data released by Spotify in December 2022, Pasoori was the most-streamed Pakistani song globally as well as the most-streamed song in Pakistan in 2022. It was also the second most-searched song in the world and the most Hum to Search song in the world, as per Google Trends’ Year in Search 2022 report.
Pasoori was featured in episode 4 of the Disney+ miniseries Ms. Marvel and on the soundtrack of the off-Broadway production Monsoon Wedding The Musical, directed by Mira Nair.A Pakistani song in a Marvel production on Disney+ is not a footnote in music history. It is a landmark moment.
With over one billion views on YouTube as of January 2025, Pasoori is currently the most watched Coke Studio music video of all time and the first Coke Studio song to reach this milestone.
In September 2022, Sethi was included in Time magazine’s Time 100 Next list and was recognized for his ability to use ancient classical ragas to challenge and expand notions of gender, sexuality, and belonging.
The entry was written by author Amitav Ghosh, who described Pasoori as a virtuoso demonstration of how artists can, in subtle ways, subvert restrictions imposed by authoritarianism and intolerance. Being written about in Time by a Booker Prize-winning author is not something that happens to most performers.
In April 2023, Sethi performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, making him only the second person of Pakistani origin, after Arooj Aftab, to perform at the festival. In March 2023, he performed at the South Asian Excellence pre-Oscars event hosted by Paramount Pictures, Priyanka Chopra, and Mindy Kaling.
In September 2023, the Saxena Center for Contemporary South Asia at Brown University announced that Sethi would serve as its first Artist in Residence as a visiting scholar. An artist-in-residence appointment at an Ivy League university is a recognition of intellectual and cultural contribution that goes far beyond what chart positions can measure.
Ali Sethi is not simply a chart-topping artist. He is a cultural institution in his own right, someone who has demonstrated that Pakistani music belongs on the world’s most prestigious stages. His live performances blend classical ghazal, Punjabi folk, and contemporary composition in a way that is accessible to a wide audience while carrying genuine artistic depth.
According to Spotify data released in 2022 and 2023, Sethi is among the most streamed Pakistani artists in the world. That reach translates directly to event impact. When Ali Sethi performs, audiences arrive already knowing the songs, and that connection makes every live show a shared experience rather than a one-way performance.
