Every few years, someone comes along in Pakistan’s music scene and changes the direction of the entire conversation. Maanu is one of those artists. Born and raised in Lahore, he is a singer, songwriter, rapper, and producer who built his career from the ground up, without a label push or a television platform to lean on. What he had instead was a genuine voice, a sharp pen, and a sound that a whole generation of young Pakistanis instantly recognized as their own.
Today, Maanu draws 6.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify , a number that puts him among the most streamed Pakistani artists on the planet. But the number alone does not tell the full story. What matters is how he got there.
Maanu, originally Rehman Afshar, was only nine when he started playing the piano, which he later swapped for a guitar. Over the years, he honed his craft and delved into hip-hop, with music rooted in storytelling and composition, with writing always taking precedence.
His parents were always lovers of music and the arts, and he was exposed to South Asian classical and film music from a very early age. He started playing guitar in grade five and wrote his first song in 2016 at the age of eighteen. That combination of classical grounding and modern influences created an artist who could move comfortably between soulful pop, R&B, and rap without ever sounding out of place in any of them.
Maanu counts the band Sikandar Ka Mandar and rapper-singer Faris Shafi among his inspirations. He allowed influences such as Drake and Ed Sheeran to lightly colour his own brand of soulful, relatable Urdu and Punjabi pop and R&B. That blending of local and global reference points is exactly what makes his music connect with audiences who grew up consuming both worlds simultaneously.
Maanu did not take shortcuts. He started releasing music independently and built his audience one track at a time through digital platforms when Pakistani independent music was still finding its footing online.
With a string of hits including Melancholic, Dou Pal, Kidhar, Pyaar Hai Asli featuring Hasan Raheem, and 4u, Maanu’s star kept rising steadily. Each release added a new layer to his story and pulled in listeners who felt like he was writing directly about their own experiences.
Commercial success and critical acclaim came relatively quickly. Maanu, whose initial aim was to perform at the Lahore Music Meet festival, fulfilled that dream as soon as 2020, the same year he released his debut EP Yain City. That debut project was a statement of intent. It was dedicated to Lahore and aimed to create a contemporary musical identity for the city he has always called home.
With two remarkable EPs, Yain City and Sakuna Matata, Maanu gave audiences glimpses into his creative range, leaving listeners wanting more. Each project expanded his sonic vocabulary while staying true to the emotional honesty that made people pay attention in the first place.
If there is one moment that defines where Maanu’s career stands right now, it is Jhol. His collaboration with Coke Studio on Season 15 resulted in Jhol, his first official track on the platform, which went on to be the most successful song of the season. It reached number one in both Pakistan and India, spending several weeks topping charts globally. Jhol was ultimately the most streamed Pakistani song in the country for 2024.
The song, a duet with Annural Khalid, was something Maanu had actually written long before it reached Coke Studio. It was only when it was pitched to Xulfi, the maestro behind Coke Studio Season 15, that its full potential was unlocked. Jhol has amassed over 30 million views on YouTube alone.
For Maanu personally, the song carries deep meaning. He mentioned in an interview that Jhol was also his mother’s favourite track before she passed away. That kind of personal weight behind a song is something audiences feel even if they do not know the backstory. It is the difference between music that sounds good and music that actually moves people.
One of the clearest signs of an artist’s standing in any music scene is who they work with. Maanu has collaborated with some of Pakistan’s most respected artists including Atif Aslam, Ali Sethi, and Talal Qureshi.
He has also worked with Abdullah Siddiqui, Hasan Raheem, and Natasha Noorani , a group that essentially represents the best of Pakistan’s current independent music generation. These are not casual features. They are partnerships between artists who genuinely respect each other’s work, and the results have consistently delivered quality.
He has also worked with renowned brands including Coke Studio, PSL, Pepsi, and VELO, adding commercial credibility to his independent artistic reputation. He has managed to maintain his creative integrity while also building the kind of brand partnerships that sustain a long-term career.
What makes Maanu particularly interesting as an artist is that he does not limit himself to one lane. Embracing his audacious alter-ego Chotus, Maanu fearlessly ventures into the realms of rap and hip-hop, pushing creative boundaries with raw energy and an unapologetic attitude. That dual identity, the soulful singer and the sharp rapper, gives him a creative flexibility that most artists his age simply do not have.
Maanu is not just a streaming number. He is a live performer who commands real attention on stage. His North America tour includes sold-out shows in cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, and Houston , proving that his fanbase extends well beyond Pakistan into the South Asian diaspora communities around the world.
His upcoming full-length album Thikaana, expected in 2025, is poised to redefine the boundaries of Pakistani music. Everything he has done so far has been building toward this moment, and the anticipation from both audiences and industry insiders suggests this album could be the biggest chapter yet in his career.
Maanu is the artist of this generation. His music is number one on charts, his live shows are selling out internationally, and his name is one that Pakistani audiences across all age groups recognize and love. Whether you are planning a corporate event, a private concert, a university show, or a large-scale music night, booking Maanu guarantees a performance that your audience will genuinely feel long after it is over.
He brings authenticity, stage presence, and a catalog of songs that people already know and love by heart. That connection between an artist and an audience is exactly what makes any event unforgettable.
